City centres have always been an important topic on the urban studies research agenda, which has recently incorporated discussions on various policies for the revitalisation of central areas, curbing the processes of depopulation and degradation that many city centres in Brazil and other countries have been undergoing. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the central region of the municipality of Itatiba (SP) and seeks to understand why it has been gaining value, especially in the last decade, unlike many other centres in the country, which are undergoing depopulation and deterioration. For this study, a reflection was made covering the last fifty years, verifying the main transformations that have occurred and the most relevant characteristics of the region in question. The research methodology used bibliographic materials such as books, academic articles, and theses, supplemented by newspaper and magazine reports and advertisements. Interviews were conducted with residents and frequent visitors to the city centre. This project is expected to contribute to the understanding of city centres, their uses, transformations, and permanence, based on the case of Itatiba.
