This book deals with the phenomenon known in the history of Brazilian Catholicism as the Catholic Restoration. The Catholic Restoration was a project of action of the Catholic Church with the republican political elites and the society in the conjuncture that started in the 1920s and lasted until the mid-1950s. The book seeks to analyze this phenomenon in Maranhão, more specifically in the inland city of Caxias, the gateway to the actions of the Catholic hierarchy in the so-called sertão of Maranhão.
