Geographically, the Amber Lands include the western outlying district of the southeast sector of the Baltic Sea littoral, or "Southeast Baltic". Dating to this historical period are the amber-bearing layers of glauconit ("blue ground"), covered by a mass of sandy soils carried by the glacier sweeping in from east Europe approximately 2 million years ago.
