This novel has an additional thematic layering of Christian belief. Griselda's evil is rooted in and explained by her devotionto Satanic arts, while Phil's efforts are aided by his two Christian friends, Lisa, a researcher at the police department and burgeoning romantic partner, and Doc, the medical examiner. As Phil's grows increasingly frustrated by Griselda's ability to avoid justice, he descends into spiritual crisis, exacerbated by the evil hexes Griselda has cast upon him.
