Tadeusz Kamil Marcjan ?ele?ski was born December 21, 1874, in Warsaw, to Wanda, née Grabowska, and W?adys?aw ?ele?ski, a prominent composer and musician. A cousin of Tadeusz's was the notable Polish poet Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer. Since Warsaw was then under Russian rule, and education in Polish was forbidden, in 1892 ?ele?ski left for Kraków, in Austrian-ruled Galicia, where he enrolled at the Jagiellonian University medical school in Krakow.
