Ennore creek lies in the middle of the study area. Ennore Creek is an aperture of the brackish water system into the Bay of Bengal. The industries are mostly chemical based, manufacturing petro-chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, paints etc. There are two power plants at Ennore, namely, Ennore Thermal Power Plant and North Chennai Thermal Power Plant. The discharge of these industries also continuously polluting the Creek and the study area which is in the proximity of the Ennore Creek is affected through percolation of the contaminated water. Hence, the present comprehensive investigation on the surface water, sediment, groundwater, socio-economic conditions and the management solutions to this fragile zone is imperative in this region.
