The paucity of the historical record confounds the efficient probabilistic characterization of storm surge hazards. This book presents efficient parametric and nonparametric simulation techniques for evaluating the frequency-of-occurrence of storm surge hazards under stationary and non-stationary climate scenarios. Given the prohibitive computational requirements of state-of-the-art basin-scale hydrodynamic simulations, the effective implementation of a stochastic simulation framework requires the introduction of a new paradigm: optimal function recovery, rather than repeated direct hydrodynam...
The paucity of the historical record confounds the efficient probabilistic characterization of storm surge hazards. This book presents efficient parametric and nonparametric simulation techniques for evaluating the frequency-of-occurrence of storm surge hazards under stationary and non-stationary climate scenarios. Given the prohibitive computational requirements of state-of-the-art basin-scale hydrodynamic simulations, the effective implementation of a stochastic simulation framework requires the introduction of a new paradigm: optimal function recovery, rather than repeated direct hydrodynamic simulations, via sparse grid-supported multivariate regression functions. The methods presented in the book are directly applicable to other multi-parameter hazards such as earthquakes and riverine floods.
