Each plant is described and illustrated with two or more color photographs depicting the general form of the plant, and, in most cases, a close-up image of the plant's flower is provided to make positive identification of an unknown plant easier. The text of this book is based on the first edition (1948) of Spring Wild Flowers by Earl. L. Core (1902-1984). Dr. Core was a biology professor at West Virginia University for more than 40 years, and co-author of the classic four-volume Flora of West Virginia. The present work updates all botanical names, revises portions of the text, includes over 500 color photographs, a county-level distribution map for each species, and organizes the plants by flower color.
