Geboren am 23. April 1891 auf Gut Sonzowka.
Erster Klavierunterricht bei der Mutter, mit fünf Jahren komponiert er Klavierstücke . Systematischer Unterricht durch R. Glière.
1904-1914 Studium am St. Petersburger und Moskauer Konservatorium, u.a. bei Ljadow, Rimskij-Korsakow, Tanejew, Tscherepnin.
Oppostion zur konservativen Konzertpraxis, Anschluss an avantgardistische Kreise.
Seit 1908 Beginn einer außergewöhnlichen pianistischen Karriere.
1914: Rubinstein-Preis
1918: verlässt Russland nach der Revoluiton. Lebt in Japan, Amerika, Europa (Paris)
1933: Rückkehr nach Russland. Zählt zu den höchstbegehrten Persönlichkeiten seines Heimatlandes. Engagierte Mitarbeit an Projekten offizieller Kulturpolitik (Film- und Schauspielmusiken)
Stirbt am 4. März 1953 in Moskau.
