Much of the building, however, including the bell tower, is in the Decorated Gothic style of the first half of the 14th century. St. James'' also has features from the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries. In 1635 John and Isabel Aston gave a bell to St James'' church. In 1827 St. James'' tower had five bells. Since 1974 the bells have been rehung and their number has been increased to make a peal of eight bells.
