The book introduces the fundamental skills of mechanics modelling, so that students and engineers who have mastered the mathematics know how to apply it to solve real engineering problems. The book also demonstrates the central role of practical modelling and analytical solution in solving problems correctly and efficiently using a numerical method such as the finite element method. The materials in the book have been organised according to an approach in which engineering examples are often discussed before introducing a new concept or a new method of solution. It is expected that this way the reader may understand more directly why the theories are needed and hence become more interested in achieving a more in-depth understanding.
