More than twenty years later Rupert encounters Elizabeth Eve, a leading ballerina who, in every aspect possible, resembled and reminded him of Sonia. Despite her age as many years younger, Beth and Rupert become close friends - intimate to the point of never becoming lovers. But Beth, for him, lived Sonia once again, the woman he always held devoted above any other until, by fate and consequence, Beth meets and falls in love with another - a young man of mixed race - the child of Sonia the postulant.
