Yet, in the twentieth century a number of prominent voices both within and without the Reformed community have been critical of classic threefold covenant theology: redemption, works, and grace. Critics have rejected the covenants of redemption as supposedly being overly speculative, and correlatively have cast shade upon the covenant of works because it supposedly rests on exegetical thin ice. Historic voices from within the tradition, however, are adamant about the importance of all three covenants-the covenant of grace cannot stand on its own, but is a part of a greater whole that includes the covenants of redemption and works"--
