The Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union heads the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. However with the Lisbon Treaty the post of High Representative was merged with the External Relations Commissioners and separated from the Secretary-General of the Council, and at the meeting of the European Council of 19 November 2009 Pierre de Boissieu was appointed as the new secretary-general. On 26 June 2011, Uwe Corsepius took over from Pierre de Boissieu as the new secretary-general. The Council appointed Uwe Corsepius on 22 December 2009 for the period from 26 June 2011 to 30 June 2015.
