This work reports on a three year longitudinal and
experimental research which aimed at promoting the
use of isiXhosa (one of the African languages) as a
medium of instruction in science from Grade 4 6 in
two primary schools in the Western Cape. The results
of the study show that there is a positive
correlation between the use of the learner s mother
tongue as a medium of instruction and learners
conceptual development and academic performance in
science.
