This book comprises selected contributions of major sciences to foster sustainable developments, under disparate and diverse strategies, with prospective views, in a systematic way, where the multidisciplinary endeavour is complemented with inter- and transdisciplinary approaches. It shows that fields of science can work together, avoiding artificial boundaries, to accomplish a higher benefit, and it illustrates the high responsibility of science to achieve sustainability at a global scale, namely by pursuing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).The involved sciences include the following, aligned with the Divisions of the European Academy of Sciences: Chemical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Materials Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Social Sciences.Although studies of particular sciences are currently being often oriented towards sustainable goals, there is a lack of literature with a systematic and integrated vision involving various sciences in trans- and multidisciplinary visions. This book contributes to fill this gap.It has a much wider scope than other books focused on particular topics or sciences. The list of authors includes a pleiad of scientists representing the major sciences, highly recognized, as illustrated by those who have been awarded the Blaise Pascal Medals by the European Academy of Sciences: Michel Goldman (Medicine and Life Sciences, Ch. 5), Pete Smith (Earth and Environmental Sciences, Ch. 9), Elvira Fortunato (Materials Sciences, Ch. 15), Peter Sadler (Chemistry, Ch. 35), Luis O Silva (Physics, Ch. 40), Manuel Garcia Velarde (Physics, Ch. 41), and Alfio Quarteroni (Mathematics, Ch. 44).Written by 146 skilful authors from 91 institutions and 22 countries, from the academic, industrial and commercial sectors, this book is expected to become an inspiration for further scientific studies and cooperations among the different players, paving the way to sustainability and human welfare.
