Young, handsome, and ambitious scholar Tito Melema falls in love with the erudite and intelligent Romola, daughter of another scholar and convinces her to marry him. In a mock ceremony Tito also marries a naive young Florentine girl Tessa. Political and religious upheaval fills the city, plague spreads, and events reveal Tito to be a dishonorable and cowardly schemer who betrays the trust of his adoptive father. Otherworldly and charitable Romola is thrust in the middle of this personal and political conflict, and her fate becomes entwined with historical events, and with Tessa, the "other wife." Autor

Mary Ann Evans (1819 - 1880), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72) and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight.
