Robert Rosen was born on June 27, 1934 in Brownsville (a section of Brooklyn), in New York City. He studied biology, mathematics, physics, philosophy, and history-- especially the history of science-- and became a dedicated student of mathematics, physics, and biology. Then, under Professor Nicolas Rashevsky's guidance at the University of Chicago, he became a mathematical or theoretical biologist with a PhD in Mathematical Biology in 1959. His PhD research area was in Relational Biology, and he remained at the University of Chicago until 1964.
