While dancing between the two cultures he not only lives the worst of both worlds, but also the best, which includes falling in love. The more he tries to find a balance, the more he is thrust into the ugly side of life, racism now gathering him in, and learning that childhood buddies are not automatically friends. But his quest also begins to open his mind to issues far deeper, which he longs to pursue, only to become more involved in everyday conflicts, his work involving oil drilling, whether to keep the love of his life from her own happiness away from the destitution of reservation life, whether to rebel, or to seek the success and comfort of his earlier days.
