It was first discovered by Captain James Cook In 1769, and after bitter internecine warfare between the indigenous tribes, combined with white-settler lawlessness the Maoris accepted Britain's offer to govern the islands. A ceremony was promptly held at Paihia on the northeast coast of the North Island, on what is now known as the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. This event occured in 1840.
