Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Force. During the war it was used primarily as a transport airfield. After the war it was closed in 1946. Construction of Ramsbury airfield began in mid-1941 and the majority of the work was completed by August 1942. When originally built Ramsbury airfield was intended for use by RAF operational training units, but on 11 June 1942 it was one of the 13 bases allocated to the USAAF for use by transport and observation squadrons.
