Prior to that he had served in the United States House of Representatives from January 3, 1959 to August 8, 1960. He was the son of NPL North Dakota Congressman Usher L. Burdick. Burdick received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Minnesota. Like his father, Quentin Burdick was a member of the progressive Non-Partisan League, which placed its candidates on the Republican Party primary ballot until 1956, when the NPL aligned with the Democratic Party and became the Democratic-NPL.
