Today's war-fighter has become extremely reliant on network-based tools and technologies to perform the day-to-day mission. The widespread use of video teleconferencing, high-resolution and real-time intelligence imagery, IP telephony, different forms of streaming video/audio, and network-based collaborative planning tools, to name a few examples, has caused bandwidth requirements of military forces to skyrocket. These are the weapons required to effectively command and control current military operations. This poses a significant challenge particularly in deployed and bandwidth-constrained environments that rely on limited communications resources to provide network services. The Department of Defense (DoD) addresses this challenge in OIF and OEF by developing fixed infrastructures in deployed environments and applying a large amount of funding towards leasing commercial satellite bandwidth and terrestrial resources.
