It is owned and operated by the Shenzhen Metro Company, Ltd. (SZMC). The metro opened on December 28, 2004, making Shenzhen the fifth city in mainland China to have a subway after Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The Shenzhen Metro currently has 2 lines, 22 stations, and 25.2 km of total trackage in operation. Both existing lines are undergoing expansion and three new lines are under construction. The network will reach a total length of 177 km by 2011.
