Process engineering is concerned with the study, construction, and determination of the layout, operating conditions, and operation of the often very special and complex equipment needed to manage industrial chemical reactions throughout their course. This approach is the responsibility of the engineering and design department. It is based on fundamental knowledge or, failing that, on correlations established from experience; a more technical aspect concerns the choice of equipment and materials with which the installations will be made.
