This book comprises the proceedings of the Annual Conference of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering 2024. The contents of this volume focus on a specialty conference in engineering management. This volume will prove a valuable resource for those in academia and industry.
Dr. Pouya Zangeneh is the Endowed Chair in Engineering Project Management and an Assistant Professor at the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary. His research focuses on integrating modern technologies, including AI, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and digital information systems and engineering management practices for project de-risking and decision-making. He also specializes in risk-based maintenance strategies, applying AI and decision-support tools to optimize asset performance and lifecycle management. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, focusing on probabilistic modeling, knowledge representation, and socio-technical risks in engineering projects and systems. Before joining academia, Dr. Zangeneh led the development of a Risk Analytics group at a major Canadian international engineering consultancy. Under his leadership, the group delivered advanced risk modeling solutions to infrastructure and industrial clients. His work hasalso included a collaboration with the Columbia Center for Sustainable Investment (CCSI), where he contributed to developing data structures for improving financial transparency and governance in resource projects.
Dr. Farnaz Sadeghpour is an Associate Professor of Construction and Project Management in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary (AB) and a Visiting Academic Fellow at the University of Cambridge (UK). Her research interests are at the intersection of construction site operations and logistics, digital innovation, and construction site safety. Her transdisciplinary research and technology innovations on Dynamic Digital Twins continue to help improve safety practices and productivity in construction sites. Building on a strong collaboration with the construction industry, she leads a transdisciplinary research team comprising experts from diverse disciplines, including civil, geomatics, and software engineering, psychology and human factors, kinesiology, and population health and safety. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Sadeghpour has served in multiple capacities at the CSCE, including as Chair of the Construction Division and the Publications Committee. She is currently the Vice President Technical of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE). She is a strong advocate for advancing Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Accessibility (EDIA) in civil engineering. She established and chairs the EDIA Task Force at CSCE, where she has successfully advanced several major initiatives within a short period, including the creation of a new CSCE EDIA Leadership Award, the organization of Tech Talks for Truth and Reconciliation, and spearheading the Indigenize Civil initiative. In 2024 Dr. Sadeghpour was inducted as a CSCE Fellow for her contributions to the profession of civil engineering in Canada.
Clare E. Robinson, PhD., P.Eng. is a Canada Research Chair in Water Quality and Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western University. She received her BEng and PhD from the University of Queensland, Australia. Before joining Western University in 2009, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship at EPFL in Switzerland and worked as a Water Engineer for a water supply and sanitation NGO in Bangladesh. She is a registered professional engineer in Ontario. Dr. Robinson specializes in investigating water-borne contaminants in the environment with a focus on understanding the sources, transport and fate of contaminants in natural and engineered systems. Dr. Robinson s current research includes evaluating impact of groundwater contaminants on surface water quality, urban stormwater management for water quality control, and determining the impacts of onsite wastewater syst
