This book investigates the complex strands that inextricably link gender and power relations, demonstrating how gender is constructed through the practices of power. The contributors argue that `female¿ and `male¿ are shaped not only at the micro-level of everyday social interaction but also at the macro-level where social institutions control and regulate the practice of gender. Power/Gender explores: how theorizing on power is affected when gender is taken into account; post-Foucauldian theory of gender and power; whether it is possible to separate gender and power; the connections between gender and the practice of power in political contexts, and how these connections work in the specific contexts of women¿s lives; and whether the construction of sex or gender is an expression of power relations.

Autor

H Lorraine Radtke is Associate Professor of Psychology at The University of Calgary. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on social psychology and the psychology of gender. Her current research focuses on young adults′ discourse on knowledge, their roles in the processes of creating and acquiring knowledge and their experiences in educational settings. Another project involves an analysis of the relationships between mothers and sons. Henderikus J Stam is Professor of Psychology at the University of Calgary. His research and teaching interests focus on the historical and theoretical foundations of psychology. In particular, he is interested in the nature of embodiment and the discursive practices of everyday life that form the basis of psychological categories. He is the editor of the journal Theory & Psychology and co-editor of the first and third volumes of Recent Trends in Theoretical Psychology.
