This book presents a comparative analysis of political governance and includes case studies from various African countries. It further sheds light on the paradox of poverty despite Africa's plentiful resources and traces its roots in historical legacies of colonialism and leadership failures.

The book examines the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) initiated by the African Union (AU) in 2003 and explores the APRM's role in promoting sustainable development, political stability, and integration. Against this background, the book dissects the four thematic areas of the APRM, with a focal point on democratic and political governance, illuminating challenges and proposing solutions.

In case studies on selected African countries, contributors present governance structures, highlighting the struggle for accountability, representation, and public participation. The book highlights alarming indicators of weak governance, including corruption and declining public engagement, and reflects Africa's journey toward effective governance. By doing so, the book scrutinizes African governing systems' responses to crises and offers valuable insights into the continent's quest for progress and transformation.

Autor

Omololu Fagbadebo is a Research Associate at the Durban University of Technology, South Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Previously, he taught Political Science at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, and at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. He was Press Secretary to the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Nigeria, 1999-2003. Fagbadebo participated in the Study of the United States Institutes (SUSI) on American Politics and Political Thought Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, USA, in 2010. His research focuses on comparative politics, legislative studies, public governance, development studies, public institutions, and African government and politics. His book publications include Legislature in Nigeria’s presidential Democracy of the Fourth Republic: Power, Process and Development (2023), co-edited with Prof. Mojeed Alabi, published by Springer International Publishing, Democracy and Political Governance in South Africa: The African Peer Review Mechanism (2023), co-edited with Professor Isioma U. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and has over 20 years of experience in academia. Ile is a member of the Association of Southern African Schools and Departments of Public Administration and Management (ASSADPAM) and the South African Association for Public Administration and Management (SAAPAM). An accomplished researcher and a member of various research teams, her international experience includes collaborative work with the University of Bochum in Germany, the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom, Harry Truman School of Public Affairs, University of Missouri, USA and she is currently a visiting Professor at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She has tremendous passion for the continent as demonstrated by her contribution to public sector skills development in Nigeria, South Africa, and South Sudan. Isioma Ile has held leadership roles in various capacities, her passion and current research focuses on governance and public policy reforms in Africa, specifically leveraging indigenous knowledge systems in social policy monitoring and evaluation. She has published 5 books, many chapters and numerous papers in various journals.
