The aim of this study was to analyze physicochemical and bacteriological parameters in water samples from the Itapecuru River, and/or negative influences from both natural occurrences and anthropogenic actions in the municipality of Codó-MA. Water samples were collected from four different points in the river. The parameters assessed were: aspects, turbidity, temperature, pH, total alkalinity, carbon dioxide, calcium, magnesium, total hardness, chloride, depth, transparency, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen, thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia Coli. When comparing the parameters analyzed with those established in the current Federal Legislation, Ministry of Health Ordinance No. 2,914 12/12/2011 and CONAMA Resolution 357/2005, the results of the physical-chemical analyses for aspects and turbidity were the most critical, as they showed values higher than those permitted. In the bacteriological analyses for thermotolerant coliforms and E. coli, both showed high levels outside the VMP. It can be concluded that the samples analyzed were unsatisfactory in terms of the limits established in the legislation.
