At the 1987 World Championships Schersing won a silver medal in 400 m as well as another relay gold medal. At the 1988 Summer Olympics she won the silver medal in the 400 m, between Soviets Olga Bryzgina (gold) and Olga Nazarova (bronze). She also won the bronze medal in the 4 x 400 m relay, with teammates Dagmar Neubauer-Rübsam, Emmelmann and Busch.
