In this backdrop, the present study seeks to examine the trends in the financial performances of 20 top banking companies, major players in the Indian money market, during the period 2001-02 to 2010-11. All the banking companies have been selected on the basis of their total income and balance sheet size. This study is to give a focus on the evaluation of comparative financial performance of the banking institutions in the selected public and private sector banks in India during the period 2001-02 to 2010-11. The role of banks in promoting the economic and social welfare for the betterment and advancement of the life of the community is well recognized.
