Over the years geoscientists have realized the great complexity of the earth and its environment. In particular, the knowledge of the geopotential field and its anomalies has become an important issue. It turned out that dedicated highly accurate sensors, when operating in an isolated manner have their shortcomings. Over the years geoscientists have realized the great complexity of the earth and its environment. In particular, the knowledge of the geopotential field and its anomalies has become an important issue. It turned out that dedicated highly accurate sensors, when operating in an isolated manner have their shortcomings. Combining globally available spaceborne data with local airborne and/or terrestrial observations is therefore the way forward. At this stage of development inverse modelling of spaceborne geodata is a mathematical challenge which should include the numerical progress obtainable by modern multivariate approximation. These research notes are devoted to a new and promising way of recovering the geopotential from spaceborne data.
