He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Mets as a 16-year old on July 17, 1999, and started his professional career by playing in the Venezuelan Summer League for the Mets. Because he was so young when he signed, he spent six years in the low minors with the Mets, playing for Kingsport, Brooklyn, Capital City and St. Lucie. His best statistical year was in 2003 with Capital City, where he went 13 6, with a 3.47 ERA in 23 starts with 3 complete games and 106 strikeouts with only 24 walks.
