„A picture often says more than thousand words.“ We use this phrase constantly, nevertheless, never think to ourselves about her true meaning. However, what happens if one takes this formulation once literally? The novel "Charlie Bone und die sprechenden Bilder" of Jenny Nimno answers this question. The ten-year-old central figure Charlie Bone is a member of the Darkwood family, the direct descendants of a legendary magician, the „red king“, are and whose family tree produced numerous artists, Hypnotiseure and magicians. However, Charlie himself is a completely normal boy so he believes, in any case, in the beginning. One day this changes all of a sudden when the ten-year-old gets a photo by a mistake by chance which shows an unknown man and his newborn daughter. All at once the father in the picture starts to speak without any advance warning with a woman, apparently of the photographer. From this moment Charlie's life from the hinges lifts, because all pictures which the boy sees properly seem him in the ground talk to would want. Unfortunately Charlie's sullen grandmother gets in addition wind of this talent and sends Charlie as a result after a consultation with her three dark sisters on the Bloor, a school for special-gifted children. Though there the ten-year-old finds quickly new friends, but also mighty and unprincipled enemies. However, moreover, Charlie Bone gives up the search for the meaning of the very first Bilders to which he has listened in, not. The events soon rush things, and Charlie's different life ropes seem to combine themselves to an only one. Charlie discovers a conspiracy which has also produced the supposed death of Charlie's father beside the disappearance of a girl, and brings to light the dark secrets of the magic world …
„Charlie Bone and the speaking pictures“ shows quite clearly some parallels to J K. Rowlins to much promised "Harry Potter" on, takes second place to the substantially more known novel, nevertheless, in nothing. Nimno succeeds it in building up the action highly ingeniously, and tears the reader with in the enchanting world of the magic and fantasy. Furthermore she gets to generate the most absorbing high voltage even with an easy writing style appropriate for children. The reading of the book prepares a lot of fun and nervous tickle for the reader, partially reminds on account of to many only bit by bit with the search for the „secret of the speaking pictures“ to full empty places even of detective's work. This narrative technique is suited especially well for children and youngsters who are the target group of this book because they can also identify easily with the central figure Charlie Bone. All in all, a really very recommendable child novel and youth novel which puts even "Harry Potter" in the shade in my opinion on account of the extremely high tension and the substantially better contrived action
