The optimal weight gain was then modeled by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in the United States in 1990. The IOM recommends a weight gain according to the Body Mass Index. Thus, the ideal weight gain over 9 months for a woman whose BMI is less than 19.8 kg/m² is 12.5 to 18 kilos, whereas it will only be 6 kilos for a woman with a BMI greater than 26 kg/m². The weight gain acquired during pregnancy can be broken down as follows: 2/3 related to the weight of the fetus, the placenta, the amniotic fluid and the uterus1/3 which corresponds to the storage of energy in the form of fat, particularly in anticipation of breastfeeding, and to water retention.
