Jon Levine, a Florida-based investment manager, and Dr. Alyssa Martin, his life partner, are unable to contact their friend, Matthew Johnson, an FBI agent who once tapped them for help in his cases. Failing to reach him by phone, they decide to fly to New York to visit him. There they discover there is no record of his ever having owned the apartment they once visited him in, now inhabited by a couple who claim to have lived there for twelve years.
