It was commonly referred to as "Metro" or "Metro Toronto" to avoid confusion with the former City of Toronto, which was one of its constituent municipalities. The boundary of present-day Toronto is the same as that of Metropolitan Toronto at the time of its dissolution: Lake Ontario to the south, Etobicoke Creek and highway 427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north and the Rouge River to the east. Metropolitan Toronto consisted of all the hamlets, villages, townships, towns, and cities within those boundaries.
