Sand is renowned for leading an unorthodox lifestyle that includes dressing like a man, smoking cigars, and engaging in a number of affairs. Women's rights and issues of social justice were frequent topics in her work. Her best-known pieces are ""Consuelo,"" ""Indiana,"" and ""Lélia.""
