Keil turned pro in the middle of his junior year at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. One of Keil's greatest moments came in a 6 2, 7 6 defeat of Pete Sampras, then ranked 8th in the world at the Queen's Club ATP World Tour event in 1991. Keil went on to play in the main draw at Wimbledon twice and reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 167
