Toofie Lauder or Maria Elise Turner Lauder was a Canadian teacher, linguist, author, and philanthropist. Born in Saint-Armand, Canada, in 1833, she was known for her extensive travel across Europe, during which she wrote novels, poetry, and travel literature. Her writings often reflected her experiences and observations from her journeys. Lauder was also an active member of the temperance movement, advocating for social change and public well-being. Her works garnered attention for their vivid descriptions and cultural insights, highlighting the importance of preserving traditions and languages. She was married to Abram William Lauder and had a son, William Waugh Lauder. Lauder pursued her education at Oberlin College, which contributed to her broad intellectual and cultural understanding. Over the years, her literary works and philanthropic efforts left a mark on Canadian and international society, especially her commitment to promoting social causes. Lauder's life reflected a deep commitment to education, cultural understanding, and the betterment of society, making her a notable figure in the fields of literature and social reform. She passed away in Toronto in 1922 at the age of 89.
