Composing this book fueled his struggle against his illness as it became the focus of his attention and a source of connection to his family members. Nearly paralyzed, he wrote this book with one thumb on his phone from 2021 to shortly before his death in 2022. In these memoirs Mike tells of living with ALS; family history, stories, and memories; thoughts on community, leadership, and parenting; stories of his passions; and commentary for the times. The author's inimitable personality comes clearly through these pages with his gift for storytelling, irreverent sense of humor, and love for his family. All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to ALS care and research. Mike always said he "lived a long and storied life," and Legacy tells many of those stories in his own words for his family, friends, and future generations.
