An insightful, inspirational and enlightening portrait of Father Edward J. Flanagan, the man who founded Boys Town and let a cultural revolution that forever changed the way children were viewed, valued, and cared for in society.
A 1944 graduate of Boys Town, Father Clifford Stevens knew Father Edward Flanagan as a caregiver, a friend, and most importantly, as a mentor who helped guide Stevens' decision to enter the priesthood. Father Stevens was ordained in 1956, celebrating his first Mass at Boys Town's Dowd Chapel. He joined the United States Air Force in 1961, serving as a military chaplain at bases in the United States and overseas until his honorable discharge at the rank of major in 1968. A stint as the publisher of a magazine on contemporary issues facing Catholic priests and pastoral assignments at several small Nebraska churches followed. In 1984, Father Stevens fulfilled a dream he had held since his ordination when he founded the Tintern Monastery near Oakdale, Nebraska. Father Stevens later returned to Boys Town, serving as a priest at Dowd Chapel and conducting research on Boys Town history. A widely published author, he has penned numerous books and articles, many of which focus on the work of Father Flanagan and Boys Town. Father Stevens currently resides in Omaha, Nebraska.
