Two novel drug delivery systems were developed for lamotrigine: orally disintegrating tablets (ODTs) and sustained release tablets (SRTs). ODTs are particularly useful for pediatric and geriatric patients, as well as for those who have difficulty swallowing, providing rapid onset of action to control emergencies. In contrast, sustained release tablets offer the advantage of reduced dosing frequency by prolonging drug action. In this project, both ODTs and SRTs of lamotrigine were prepared using simple methods to address different therapeutic needs in epilepsy management.
