Manuel de los Reyes was one of the first prose writers of American literature, Washington Irving was a scholar without being overly academic. His fame is owed less to the quality of his work than to its pioneering nature. Much of his renown came not from what he did, but from being the first to do it. He wrote the first short stories--now a hallmark of American literature--and was also the first to turn humor and burlesque satire into literary tools. Irving delighted in detail, enjoyed descriptive writing, and always did so in a simple, unpretentious manner.
