Gabriel´s Gift describes in a subtle way the life of fifteen-year old Gabriel, a talented artist, who has immense family problems. His mother, Christine, has left Gabriel´s father because he is an unsucessful musician and a drinker. But in this difficult time, Gabriel is supported by the famous rock star Lester Jones. Partially the story is written in a witty, nice and vivid way. However, if you don´t like to read about family problems and such stuff, you should read something else, because this book is full of it.

The book Gabriel´s Gift from Hanif Kureishi is about a 15 year old boy whose parents got separated. His dad, Rex, is a passionate musician woh has no success and suffers from this very much. His mum Christine forced Rex to liave her and wants to start a new life without Rex.
Whereas Christine seems to enjoy her new freedom Rex gets very desperate. Gabriel wants his parents to be together again, of course. He convinced his father, who already gave up hope of having work, success and Christine again, to give leasons for children of rich people. He teaches them to play the guitar and is admired by the parents of them. Rex´s life goes straight up and finally he spends an evening with Christine again. They decide to try it one more time and they have success.
In my opinion the book was really good and not too hard to read. But I think the title of the book should not be Gabriel´s Gift but Rex´s Gift. It shows that a gift-in this case Rex gift-can lead your life up and down.

Gabriel´s Gift, written by Hanif Kureishi, tells the story of 15-year old Gabriel who lives with his mother Christine and his au pair Hannah and his father Rex, who leaves the family at the beginning of the story. The whole family has a kind of "gift" . Rex is a musician, who used to play the guitar pretty well but he is very unlucky and unsuccessful.
Gabriel himself is very talented for drawing and painting and he´s also writing scripts for his own movie.
There are of course also other persons like Speedy for example, who helps Gabriel to make his dream come true. The story tells the up and down which is typical for a teenager´s life connected to an individual plot.
His parents live seperately and he has to face problems with drugs and the death of his twin brother Archie.

After the breakup of his parents, his unemployed father Rex, formerly a well-known musician, who still lives in the past, has to move to an unsafe London area and hides himself in desparation. Gabriel has to grow up very fast and becomes an independent person. The only help is remembering his dead twin brother Archie and talking to him. He is a very talented boy and during his meeting with a seventies rock star L. Jones they talk about drawing pictures and also about G.´s "gift".
Hanif Kureishi shows with this book that the children of single parents, not guarded by their families, have to grow up faster than others to realize their dreams.

Writing a novel about fifteen-year-old Gabriel, a schoolboy of London`s 1990`s confronted with the problem that his father leaves his home because of permanent arguments, Hanif Kureishi tells a story about getting along with difficult situations by using the gift of imagination in order to flee the problems of reality as Gabriel does. Sticking to his vision of making a film, Gabriel follows the advice of Lester Jones, a rock star of the seventies and former partner of his unemployed father, to go on using his talents in order to make his dream of a successful future full of creative projects come true. So he finds the power to support both his father and his mother and he manages to control his own life in charge of emotional confusion which had swallowed him after the collapsing of his family. Reading this book and seeing the enormous growth of mind by believing in the power of one`s own abilities makes you trust in finding your way through life without loosing your values and hope.

Hanif Kureishi´s "Gabriel´s gift" tells you a story about a schizophrenic teenager, his careful mom, his mostly jobless dad and his father´s old friend Lester Jones and about the trouble Gabriel gets into because of copying and selling a copy of a picture, originally drawn by Lester, to the gay Speedy who´s owning a restaurant and who´s name could also stand for the drugs he´s taking. Having all these characters really good and quite detailed described, Hanif Kureishi has written an interesting story about what life can mean to a teenager growing up in really difficult and extraordinary conditions.
