The Khazars are one of the ancient Turkic-speaking peoples, who terrorised their neighbours in the VII-X centuries. They played a major role in the evolution of Russian statehood. It is no coincidence that the first Russian princes often adopted the title Kagan, thus trying to be equal to the ruler of the Khazars. However, there are still many unresolved issues of the Khazar history. Where did the Khazars disappear? Why no trace of this people was left? Until now, historians are unable to come to a consensus on the issue. The author of this publication suggests that traces of the Khazars can still be found among the peoples living in the North Caucasus and the delta of the Volga.
