As diverse as her materials are, they operate according to the same mechanism; they interact in persistently new ways with the light that falls on them, and thus their presence in a given space changes. A change in perspective sometimes changes everything. This is a mesmerizing aspect of the works of Julia Schewalie, which have an inherently ephemeral and fleeting quality often juxta- posed with a perplexingly unusual use of materials.The monochrome works generate contemplative situations, and tempt viewers with their haptically compelling surfaces while eluding anyone's immediate grasp.
