His fascination for the diverse history and culture of the Indonesian archipelago is reflected in his books Spice Islands, East Indies, Archipelago: A Journey Across Indonesia, Where Australia Collides with Asia, The Tasman Map and his latest work, Joseph Conrad's Eastern Voyages.
