Crittenberger it took part in the fighting through the summer of 1944 as the 5th Army and the British 8th Army advanced north to the River Arno. In the autumn and winter of 1944 IV Corps formed the left wing of the 5th Army, taking a relative minor role in the 5th Army's assault on the Gothic Line in the central Apennine Mountains and attempt to break through to the Lombardy plains beyond.
