Self-assessment is recognized as a key feature in learning efficacy. In this volume it is studied from several standpoints: educational testing, multimedia courseware development, and the cognitive approach of self-estimation. The contributors make links with artificial intelligence by showing how a conceptual network can provide the underlying rationale for computerized teacher-learner interactions. Some contributions focus on the multimedia aspects of an item bank (a classified store of test items), others suggest new types of multiple-choice questions, and others describe proper scoring rules and the use of subjective probability distributions or confidence contours. Various measures of adults' and youngsters' capacity in self-estimation are provided, as well as evidence on how judgments are influenced by item structure and format. The feedback potential of self-assessment is illustrated and several new concepts are presented. The volume is based on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held as part of the Special Programme on Advanced Educational Technology. The workshop brought together scholars from around the world to discuss and critically analyze the issues and problems associated with self-assessment. The book is divided into three main parts: - The input: item banking and hypermedia - The process: subjective probabilities - The output: teaching and learning feedbacks.
